Brand your Social Media Everyday

Hello friends!

As I am wrapping up with my public relations course at Indiana State, I made an infographic on branding social media. Throughout the PR course, we learned about branding yourself and ways to increase your image. As we incorporated branding into the majority of our work, I realized how much branding is involved in my own life. Even though I am not a avid blogger, I brand my social media on the regular. I am always thinking about what others would think of something or if I want people to see certain things or not. Little did I know, that is considered branding.

In my infographic, I bounced my ideas from Forbes – 9 Ways to Use Social Media to Build Your Personal Brand.  I chose five that I believe are the most important at the stage of social media involvement I am at.

Engaging regular is important to your audience. If you only post once a month on your social media accounts, that will not benefit you in any way. You need to make sure you are maintaining a regular presence on your accounts to create those relationships and connect with people. Your brand will only grow when you engage with your platforms.

With engaging regularly, make sure you are keeping your image consistent. When I say consistent, make sure that it is what you believe in. Your brand should be able to describe you. Going off of that, you need to diversify your image. Your brand will not grow when you only share the same things every week. Change the topics up, share different things about your life, and still stay true to you.

Finding people and groups that relate to you and your experiences will allow you to build authority around your personal brand. Find groups that are not always the expected and may not be the top competitors. Once you find those groups and also have your audience, reach out to them. Connections are started by one person connecting. If you have regular followers, ask them if there is anything you can do for them. This is one of many ways that your brand will become personal.

The list could go on and go with ways to brand your social media, but I hope you took tips in from the five that I think are important.

Reflecting on PR with Mullen

Hi friends, I’m back!

At Indiana State, I have had some incredible instructors and learned a lot of material that I will use for the rest of my life. One course that I will be able to relate to more than others is my public relations course. I learned a lot of valuable information but I also just learned a lot about life, in general.

First off, let me share some work that I did that I thought was very beneficial and helpful as a soon-to-be senior in college. The first part of the course, we focused on professional development. We covered resumes, cover letters, and internships/jobs. We learned about ways to spice them up and learn what employers specifically look for.

In the middle of the semester, we began reading Bulletproof Branding by Chris Westfall. Chris Westfall is a keynote speaker, author, business coach, and national elevator champion. During this time, we were planning a campaign for Westfall to come to campus during May. I was able to learn about a media lists and media kits for campaigns. It was very unreal to see all of the campaign play out. I was able to go to a dinner event with Westfall and to help work the event that was held at Tilson Auditorium at Indiana State’s campus.

As the semester continued, we learned about blogging on WordPress, LinkedIn, data analytics, ethics, crisis communication, and other PR related topics.

I think the key thing that I took away from the course was about relationships and connections. There wasn’t a day that I went to class and didn’t hear my instructor, Jennifer Mullen, talk about how much relationships matter. Throughout my process of working on internships and figuring out future plans in my life, it has always been the people who have known me to get me where I need to go. I make moves and they make things happen because I have made such awesome connections. The connections never stop and that is important to take with you with whatever you do. I have learned that that one phone call or conversation with a stranger can lead to something so extraordinary. It is key to never underestimate connections that could be made. I am thankful that I got to have an instructor that really stressed this. Some days I left class thinking about how I was going to move mountains the next day.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes, “Kid, you’ll move mountains.”

An Approach that Appears Negative Wins in Trumps Favor

Hello all!

As I am sitting at Java Haute, a local coffee shop in Terre Haute, I am feeling overwhelmed, stressed, happy, and sad. Can you tell that I am just all over the place as I only have two weeks left of my junior year? I am not ready to be a senior yet! BUT, I am a happy girl because I get to go home this summer and be with people I don’t get to see a lot during the school year. I am doing a lot of exciting things this summer, so I have a lot to look forward to with my future.

This week for my PR course, I am having to reflect on a good or bad political campaign strategy. With this, only one thing comes right to my mind and that is Donald Trumps campaign. As you read, please note that I am not sharing with what I believe in political wise!

Trumps campaign is so unique in many ways. One way that Trump made his way to become the 45th President of the United States, was by using insults. To me, this became a positive strategy for President Trump. I am looking at how he went about gaining his supporters.  Through Trumps unique campaign strategy, he made his way to become the front-runner and continued to stay in that position.

Washington Post says that Trumps campaign may appear lurching and chaotic, but he is a disciplined and  a methodical candidate. During his campaign, he made numerous attacks to all sorts of audiences. He attacked Hillary Clinton, the media, immigrants, Muslims, former President Obama and a lot others.

Trumps campaign consisted of being consistent, even when he was wrong with the things he said, he still somehow stayed true to what he said. He is not afraid to stick up for himself to those who criticize him. Trump has a way with his words and for that he knows how to expand on the truth to make things not fully true. His supporters see this as Trump being genuine and honest. Another reason that Trump really capitalizes on his campaign is because he dominates different stages. It may be social media one day and a broadcast interview another. The Washington Post explains how Trump is a real-time message tester. The example that they use is when he joked about Bernie Sanders surgery for a hernia. The first time he joked about it, he got little enthusiasm from the audience. He tried the joke again in Virginia, and he still did not get many laughs. Trump then stopped trying with it. This shows that Trump knows how to work his audiences and knows when he is not winning them with what he says.

At the end of the day, Trumps supporters stayed true to him. His campaign strategy became successful for him. This is just one of so many different political campaign strategies. Trumps way of going about his campaign was so different than any candidates in the past, positive or negative.

Communication Gone Wrong with Adidas

Hello friends! About every other day, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) sends out news to its members. It usually contains issues and trends going on in the public relations/communication industry.

No matter the time, I always keep these emails from PRSA in my email until I have a minute to look at them. Sometimes it is just a little glance or sometimes I spend minutes reading the news they offer. I find it all so interesting and I feel as if, I am not able to read this type of news elsewhere.

In my Public Relations course at Indiana State, I was asked to discuss a crisis communication situation that has recently happened. One that recently interested me in PRSA’s news was one posted by TIME. Adidas sponsored the 2017 Boston Marathon and what went wrong was the message that they sent out to the participants after the race was over. 

The message that the Boston Marathon finishers received from Adidas was, “Congrats, you survived the Boston Marathon!” Finishers were confused and questioning how Adidas did not realize the connotations of the message after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

With the backlash, Adidas had a spokesman apologize for the email. A statement that TIME released from Adidas said, “We are incredibly sorry. Clearly, there was not thought given to the insensitive subject email line we sent Tuesday.” Adidas goes on to share their deepest apology.

My issue with this is that Adidas has sponsored the Boston Marathon in years past. I feel as if they should have been very cautious when writing their email and watching the words they use to congratulate the finishers.  I believe they should of throughly proof-read their email before sending it out. Even if it was, it obviously was not enough or by different audiences. Although what was sent out with not okay, Adidas did their best to share their sincere apology with the finishers. They immediately reacted to what happened and that is what a lot of people want to hear.

This is just one of my crisis communication situations that happens everyday. One little message can take a negative 360 turn. It is crucial for a business and organizations to have a crisis communication plan. Planning for the worst is always going to benefit the company in the end.

Interviewing a Pro at Indiana State University

Two key things I got from interviewing a professional was receiving motivation and encouragement as an undergraduate student and learning about the day-to-day life of an Executive Director of Communications. I  got the opportunity to interview Lisa Moore with Communications Marketing at Indiana State University. I have had the privilege of knowing Moore through my job at Indiana State University. She attended  University of Evansville for her undergraduate with a degree in psychology. After her undergraduate, she pursued her Masters in Educational Organization and Leadership at University of Illinois. Moore has had different jobs at different universities and they all have been different for her.

First thing in the morning, Moore starts with the Indiana State Newsletters or ISUToday. Her day follows with a series of meetings and planning out when things need to be sent out. Moore says, “No two weeks or two days are the same. It is bouncing being creative yet proactive instead of being reactive.”

While interviewing Moore, I got to hear about a time she has been proud of her work. She shared a couple things that came to mind. First, she mentioned when she first started planning out and eventually bringing back the printed magazine for Indiana State. She was able to create something from scratch from hearing from different departments on what their needs were. “Brining the publication to life was definitely a proud moment.” Moore talked about how exciting to read all the great things going on at Indiana State. Another proud moment for Moore was hiring Libby Roerig to the Office of Communication and Marketing. Roerig is the Director of Communications and Media Relations.

Fun fact to share with you all about me, I was hired by Libby Roerig my sophomore year of college. I had Libby as an instructor for media writing and got the opportunity to be offered to work as a Student Media Relations Assistant in the Office of Communication and Marketing.

Moore keeps current in the Communication and Marketing industry by continuously staying present wherever she goes and listening to what is going on. As her job, it is crucial for her to do this at Indiana State to stay in the loop. “It is important that you craft with how you interact with different audiences. It is ever-changing.”

I asked Moore about tips she would offer someone starting out in PR and this is what she said:

  1. Be flexible – When you are hired, you will do something different all the time and your job will evolve. You never get hired and leave doing the exact same thing.
  2. Stay knowledgable – You have to stay current with the trends, whatever the world trends may be.
  3. First impression – You only have one time to make a first impression. You never know how a relationship will lead and those relationships could be the people who put in the good word for you.

Ways to Survive Blogging

Hi friends,

As I begin with my first blog, let me share with you what I think are some key tips to successful blogging.

AUTHENTICITY: Some of the BEST blogs that I read are the ones that speak to me. Those kind of blogs that do not sugar coat anything. It is as simple as allowing your readers to relate to your life. Going off of this, the first thing that I would recommend is to be YOU, be authentic. It is your blog. Make your readers aware of who are you are and that you stay true to yourself. A teacher told me, “Write how you would speak to your friends.” Ever since I got told that, it make me realize that I need to be myself with my writing.

PERSONAL: Second thing that I would suggest in order to become successful at blogging is to make it personal. Blogging is a way to relieve what you believe in and share with your audience what you stand for. If you don’t make it personal to your life and share life examples than readers are more likely to not care. When I read blogs, I look for stories that I can share experiences with. It is important to realize that your readers want to know about your life through your blogging. If you are blogging about a recipe or something that you love, well why do you love that? That is what I ask myself.

BRAND YOURSELF: Third tip to survive blogging is to create yourself. What do you want the blogging world to know you as? What is your brand? I think that it is important to have your own unique style to writing and especially in blogging. I, personally, continue to read certain bloggers work because I am interested in what they stand for. Find your audience that believes and supports you and write for them. Your support will follow you.

FRIENDS: Going off of your support will follow you, learn that blogging is important to find friends and not necessarily followers. Your “followers” will come along with the process. If you do all of the above, you will create friends out of your blogging. The people that are interested in what you are interested, will become your friends. The sooner you adapt that your followers will become your friends, the more successful at blogging you will be.

POSITIVITY: Lastly, I would recommend to be positive. Even when you are writing about your worst struggles in life, turn that story around and share what you got out of those struggles. As someone who has been interested in following blogs, I have loved to learn that I am not alone. After I am done reading, I am inspired from what the positive response to those struggles are. I learn from the positivity and it gives me motivation to keep going. Make sure you incorporate positivity into your blogs on the daily!
